Using Tech for Wellness, Tip #1 - Alexa Affirmations

Updated: Aug 21, 2021

I was in a coaching session the other day when affirmations came up. I have The 5-minute journal which I fill in more morning than not and it prompts you to set an affirmation for the day... but I'm SO crap at remembering it.

My brain is literally filled to the brim with information of work and school half the time and my affirmations get lost throughout. So I've been looking at how tech could help me stick with it. And the first I wanted to share is

Alexa Affirmations!

This is the art of setting a routine up on Alexa and getting her to follow a sequence of events following a prompt. The basic idea is to use a command to say to Alexa where she'll say something back.

To do this as it's most basic level:

Step 1: Head to the Amazon Alexa app

Step 2: Click more in the bottom right

Step 3: Click on "Routines"

Step 4: Hit the plus button in the top right

Step 5: Enter a routine name (I use "Affirmations - Week 1") then click "next"

Step 6: Click on "When this happens" and type in a command phrase you want Alexa to respond to, the click "next"

Step 7: Click "Add action", click on "Alexa says" (second option from the top), then hit "customised" at the top. Here you can write which phrase you want Alexa to say back, then click next.

Step 8: Click save, and wait a few seconds for Alexa to sync

Step 9: Try it out!!! Give Alexa a shout with your command phrase and off she goes.

Now I love this because I can ask any of my devices this and they'll say it back to me. Whilst I don't think I want to change it every day (although you could) a weekly theme is definitely more appealing to me and can go along with what the week is likely to be like - be it busy, creative or a challenge.

If you want that exact Alexa routine I've put together, scan the barcode below:he barcode below:e barcode below: barcode below:barcode below:arcode below:rcode below:code below:ode below:de below:e below: below:below:elow:low:ow:w::his. I've put together

I coaching session the other day when affirmations came up. I have The 5-minute journal which I fill in more morning than not and it prompts you to set an affirmation for the day... but I'm SO crap at remembering it.

Number 1: You can get Alexa to respond to different cues depending on what you say. Rather than specific actions they could be particular motivational quotes that you really like. If you find motivation hard, set the command to be "Alexa, I don't know why I'm doing this" and Alexa's response could be to remind you of your values. Or if you're, "Alexa, I'm feeling stressed", set her to remind you of your own tricks for managing stress.

Number 2: Alexa can do more than one thing after you command the trigger word. So you can set her up to follow a sequence of phrases for example. To do this, follow the above steps but after Step 7...

Step 8: Click on the plus next to "Add action" and repeat Step 7 again.

And ta-dah, she'll say one after the other.

Number 3: This stacks onto number 2 but, add in a "Wait" so that you can repeat the affirmation. After you've set your first affirmation at Step 7...

Step 8: Click on the plus next to "Add action" and then scroll down to find "Wait". In increments of 5 seconds, set how long you want Alex to wait before she takes the next action. Say the first affirmation out loud to then judge how long you need.

Number 4: End with some music! As per, after any other sequences you put in...

Step (Insert Number Here): Click on the plus next to "Add action" and then scroll down to find "Music & Podcast". Insert the Song or Artist that you want a song played from. Hit into provider box and pick the platform you have a subscription with that is most likely to have the song, then click next.

(You can also set a timer if you don't want Alexa to play the song the whole way through!)

Top Tip: Don't stress if you don't programme it in in the right order!! Next to each command there's two straight lines at the end of each action. Hold on those to be able to move the step around and get it in the right order for you.

So my sequence for this week coming is:

Trigger: Alexa (Echo!), tell me my affirmations.

Says 1: I am letting go of things I can't control

Waits 5 seconds

Says 2: I am getting 1 percent better every day

Waits 5 seconds

Says 3: I am designing a life I live

Waits 5 seconds

Says 4: I am finding my tribe

Waits 5 seconds

Says 5: On a scale of 1 to 10, you're an 11

(YES I did just get Alexa to pay me a compliment in there too!)

Plays 5 Colours in Her Hair by McFly on Spotify

So of course this gets me sorted for the day. There's my affirmations for the week, a confidence-boosting compliment and a feelgood song chucked in there too.

And there you have it, a way to sequence your Alexa up to have you ready with your affirmations to set the day off straight or remind you half way through.
